LEO KURTZ

After Roosevelt, I spent the next six years attending the U of M and St Cloud State College, at first studying chemistry and later switching to business. In 1967 I started work for United Petroleum Gas (later became Enron) supervising a fleet of rail tank cars. In 1973 I took a position with Target in Logistics and Transportation. In 1976 I moved to Pillsbury, where for the next 20+ years, I held various manager and director positions in Transportation and Distribution.

Kay and I were married in 1971 and bought our current home by Minnehaha Parkway in 1973. Nick was born in 1976 and Kali
1983. In 1983 we also bought a lake home on Casey Lake, NW of Spooner WI. We spend a lot of time at the lake and use it year round. Our son Nick and family live in the next block so we see a lot of our one granddaughter Ana, who is three. Our daughter Kali is in New York pursuing a career in fashion design.

After taking an early retirement option from Pillsbury in 1997 I started teaching downhill skiing at Hyland Hills in Bloomington. Each winter I would also take ski trips out west. In 2000 I got my private pilots license and started flying with some friends that have WWII aircraft. To see one of our flying adventures click on Hyperlink. Between skiing, flying and lake activities I have stayed pretty busy in retirement.

The last few years have brought some health issues. In 2008 I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood/bone cancer.
As of 2013 I am continuing chemo treatments at Mayo Clinic and seem to have the disease under control at this time.

In 2014 my chemo stopped working and I proceeded with a stem cell transplant at Mayo Clinic in 2015. The transplant was successful and I am now in remission. As of January 2017 I am continuing to do well and am still teaching skiing at Hyland.
