Dr. Hope Walfrid Erickson

Erickson Dr. Hope Walfrid, 59, lost her struggle with cancer in Austin, Texas on January 10, 2002. She was born in Scandia, Minnesota, earned her undergraduate degree at Gustavus Adolphus College and became a teacher. At 25, she met and quickly fell in love with Leighton Erickson; they married in 1968 and moved to Fergus Falls, MN where she taught sixth grade. She received her Masters from Moorhead State University. The family then moved to Watertown, WI where she developed an innovative Gifted and Talented education program. She also developed a Technology in the School program, one of the first in Wisconsin at the time. She received her Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin and moved to Austin, TX in 1989. She worked as Assistant Superintendent in the Eanes School district and Principal of Mountain Valley Elementary School in Comal ISD before retiring in December 2000. Dr. Erickson loved to travel with her family. Camping and hiking were favorite activities. She approached life with an open heart and a deep sense of wonder that touched many peoples lives during her years as an educator and mentor. Her active faith is a model for all people who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be remembered by her husband, three daughters, and two grandchildren. Visitation at 2-5 pm Sunday at Erickson Residence. Memorial Service at 7 pm Monday at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Austin. In lieu of flowers, Hope requested that gifts be given to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church for the ELCA World Hunger mission. Arrangements by Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N.
