Paul Bergan

Paul Martin Bergan, age 57, died of pancreatic cancer, peacefully at home, on March 31, 2000. Paul was a gentle, compassionate teacher with respect for all his students and boundless love for all his friends and family. He lived life with determination and courage, and by knowing and recording his goals he reached many of his dreams. He celebrated life with humor and many creative talents, including visual arts, writing and singing. He loved to roam and wander, on foot and on numerous trips, and completed four marathons. Paul sought knowledge and understanding with an open mind and devotion to literature, and valued and supported efforts toward sustainability, biodiversity, and advocacy for children.

Paul graduated from Roosevelt H.S., the University of Minnesota, and the University of St. Thomas. In his beloved second career he taught alternative and special education. He formerly worked at 3M Company served as an engineering officer during the Vietnam war, and later achieved the rank of Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Paul was preceded in death by his mother, Vivian; grandparents, Louise & Martin Bergan, Ida & Clarence Hamre; and aunts and 1 uncle. He is loved and will be greatly missed by wife, LoisEberhart; father Kenneth; daughter & son-in-law, Joy &Wayne Sabin; and cherished grandson Teddy; sister & brother-in-law, Ruth & Jack Anderson; nephews, Peter, Bjorn, and Benjamin; uncles, Allard Bergan and Herman Josendahl; cousins and other relatives; many precious friends and colleagues, lifelong pals and feline friend Casey.

Paul's relatives give heartfelt thanks to the outpouring of love and concern during his illness. In lieu of follwers, contributions suggested to Paul Bergan Memorial Fund c/o Lois Eberhart (Norwest Bank, 2329 Central Av NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418), Land Institute (Salina, KS), Seed Savers (Decorah, IA), St. Joseph's Home for Children (Minneapolis), Father Flanagan's Boys' Home (Boys' Town, NE) or organization of donor's choice. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 10th at 1 pm at the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel. Gathering for family and friends at the Fort Snelling Officers' Club will follow.
